Effect of hypoxia and extracellular Ca2+ on cytoplasmic Ca2+ levels in bovine articular chondroytes. Chondrocytes were isolated with collagenase at either 20% or 1% O2 and maintained at these O2 tensions throughout (16-18 hours). Cytoplasmic Ca2+ levels ([Ca2+]i) were then measured with Fura-2 in the presence (2 mM Ca2+) or absence (Ca2+-free plus 1 mM EGTA) extracellular Ca2+. Histograms represent means ± S.E.M., n = 9. * p < 0.02 ** p < 0.006.
