Effect of hypoxia and antimycin A on mitochondrial membrane pd of bovine articular chondrocytes. Chondrocytes were isolated as in Figure 1, being maintained at 20% or 1% O2 throughout. They were loaded with JC-1 to measure mitochondrial pd (as the red/green ratio - see Methods) in the presence or absence of antimycin A (50 μM). Histograms represent means ± SEM n = 9-11. ** p < 0.004 # < 0.002.
